Résumé format for jobs in India (2026)
Indian recruiters and job portals expect a predictable layout: most recent first, clear headings, no clutter. Here is the standard format, what to leave out, and how it changes for freshers, experienced professionals and government jobs.

Quick answer
The standard résumé format in India is reverse-chronological: contact details, a short summary, work experience (latest job first), education, skills, and certifications, in a single-column layout. Keep it to one page for freshers and up to two pages for experienced candidates, skip photo and personal details unless asked, and send it as a text-based PDF.
- Reverse-chronological for almost everyone; combination only for career changers.
- Freshers: Education and Projects before Skills, one page.
- Experienced: Experience first, one to two pages.
- Government jobs: follow the notification's prescribed format if one is given.
Chronological, functional or combination: which format should you use?
Use the reverse-chronological format unless you have a specific reason not to. It is what Indian recruiters, job portals and applicant tracking systems (ATS) are built around, because it shows your current role and progression at a glance.
| Format | How it's organised | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reverse-chronological | Experience and education listed latest first | Freshers, experienced professionals, steady career paths — most people | Gaps are visible; explain longer gaps in one line |
| Functional (skills-based) | Grouped by skills; job history minimal or absent | Rarely the right choice | Recruiters may read it as hiding something; ATS may not find dates and titles |
| Combination (hybrid) | A skills summary on top, then reverse-chronological experience | Career changers, returners after a break, freelancers with varied projects | Keep the skills block short; the experience section still has to carry the proof |
What is the standard section order for an Indian résumé?
Put the strongest evidence for the job right after your summary. For experienced candidates that is work experience; for freshers it is education and projects.
| # | Fresher | Experienced (2+ years) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Contact details | Contact details |
| 2 | Summary (2 lines) | Summary (2–3 lines) with total experience |
| 3 | Education (CGPA, 12th, 10th) | Work experience, latest first |
| 4 | Projects | Key projects or achievements (optional) |
| 5 | Internships / training | Skills |
| 6 | Skills | Education (degree, college, year) |
| 7 | Certifications and achievements | Certifications |
Experienced candidates can drop 10th and 12th marks once they have a few years of work history, unless an employer's application asks for them. Freshers should keep them — see how to make a fresher résumé.
How long should a résumé be in India?
- Freshers and up to about 3 years: one page.
- Mid-level (roughly 3–10 years): one to two pages. Go to two only if the second page carries relevant work, not hobbies.
- Senior roles: two pages, focused on the last 10 years. Summarise older roles in a line each.
- Academic and research CVs: can be longer, because publications and grants are listed in full.
Length is less important than relevance. Every bullet should help the reader decide you can do the job you're applying for.
Which personal details should an Indian résumé include?
Include only what a recruiter needs to contact you and judge your fit. Older Indian biodata formats asked for much more; most private-sector employers no longer need it on the résumé.
| Detail | Private-sector résumé | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Name, phone (+91), email | Include | Use a professional email address. |
| City and state | Include | Recruiters filter by location and relocation. |
| LinkedIn / portfolio / GitHub | Include if maintained | Make sure it matches your résumé. |
| Photo | Leave out unless asked | Adds nothing to fit and can disrupt ATS parsing. Some employers and roles request one; follow the instructions. |
| Date of birth, gender, marital status | Leave out unless asked | Application forms collect these where required. |
| Father's name, religion, caste, full address | Leave out | Belongs to old biodata formats; government forms ask separately. |
| Notice period, current/expected CTC | Optional | Often asked in the application form or by the recruiter instead; adding notice period can help for urgent hires. |
| Declaration with signature | Optional | Still common in India and expected by some employers; drop it if space is tight. |
Which file format and layout rules should you follow?
- PDF by default, generated from a builder or word processor so the text is selectable. A scanned image PDF can't be read by an ATS.
- Word (.docx) only if the portal or recruiter asks for it.
- Single column, standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills), no text inside images, icons or tables for core content.
- Readable font such as Calibri, Arial or Georgia at 10–12 pt, with consistent date format (Jun 2024 – Present).
- File name: Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf, not resume_final_2.pdf.
Is the format different for government jobs?
Yes. For government, PSU and many public-sector roles, the official notification decides the format. Many recruitments use an online application form instead of a résumé; others ask for a CV or biodata in a prescribed format. Always follow the notification exactly.
Where a free-form CV is accepted, government CVs usually include details private-sector résumés skip: date of birth, category (if claiming reservation), full address, educational qualifications with marks and year in a table, and a signed declaration. Questions people ask
Which résumé format is best in India?
Reverse-chronological in a single-column layout. It suits almost every candidate and is what Indian recruiters and ATS expect.
Is a photo required on an Indian résumé?
No, not for most private-sector jobs. Add one only when the employer or application asks for it.
What is the résumé format for freshers in India?
One page, reverse-chronological, with Education and Projects before Skills, and CGPA plus 10th/12th marks. See fresher résumé format.
Should I write a declaration at the end?
It's optional. Some Indian employers still expect it; if you're short of space, it is the first thing to remove.
Should I mention current and expected CTC on my résumé?
Usually not. Recruiters ask in the application form or the first call. Notice period is more useful to include if you can join quickly.
PDF or Word — which should I send?
A text-based PDF unless the portal asks for Word. Test it by copying the text out of the PDF; if it comes out jumbled, an ATS may read it that way too.
Is a résumé the same as a CV in India?
In everyday Indian usage the words are used interchangeably. Strictly, a CV is a longer academic record; see résumé vs CV.
