Fresher résumé · Step by step
How to make a résumé for freshers in India (step by step)
Campus and off-campus recruiters don't expect work experience from a fresher. They want to see what you studied, what you built, and whether you can do the job. Here is how to show that on one page.

Quick answer
To make a fresher résumé in India, use a one-page, single-column layout in this order: contact details, a 2-line summary, education (with CGPA and 10th/12th marks), projects, internships or training, skills, certifications, and achievements. Write each project as 2–3 bullets that start with an action verb, match skills to the job description, and save it as a PDF.
- One page. One column. Standard headings.
- Education and projects near the top — they are your experience.
- No photo, date of birth, religion or father's name unless the employer asks.
- Save as a text-based PDF named Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf.
What sections should a fresher résumé have, and in what order?
A fresher résumé has seven sections, ordered so the strongest evidence comes first. For most Indian freshers that is education and projects, because there is no job history yet.
- 1
Contact details
Full name, phone with +91, a professional email, city, and LinkedIn or GitHub/portfolio link if you have one worth showing.
- 2
Summary (2 lines)
Degree, 2–3 real skills, and the role you want. Skip the old “seeking a challenging position” objective.
- 3
Education
Degree, college, university, years, CGPA. Then 12th and 10th with board, year and percentage.
- 4
Projects
Your two or three best academic or personal projects, each with tools used and 2–3 bullets.
- 5
Internships / training
Company, role, dates and what you did. Move this above Projects if the internship is relevant to the job.
- 6
Skills
Grouped lists — languages, tools, domain skills — using the job description's wording.
- 7
Certifications and achievements
NPTEL, Coursera or vendor certifications, hackathons, ranks, and positions of responsibility (club lead, fest coordinator).
Should freshers include CGPA and 10th/12th marks?
Yes — in India, include CGPA and 10th/12th marks on a fresher résumé. Many campus and mass-recruitment drives set academic eligibility cut-offs, and recruiters look for these numbers first. Leaving them out often makes a recruiter assume they are low.
- Write CGPA as it appears on your marksheet: CGPA: 7.8/10. Add the percentage equivalent only if the employer asks for it.
- For 10th and 12th, give board, year and percentage: Class XII (CBSE), 2022 — 86%.
- If you have active backlogs, don't hide them in the résumé — answer honestly in the application form, which usually asks directly.
- Diploma holders: list the diploma with percentage in place of 12th.
For off-campus roles where no cut-off is stated and your CGPA is low, you can keep it but move Education below Projects so your work is read first.
How should freshers write projects and internships?
Write projects and internships the same way: title line, then 2–3 bullets that say what you built or did, how, and the result. The difference is only placement — whichever is more relevant to the job goes first.
The title line carries the facts: Project name | Tech stack or tools | Month–Year. The bullets carry your contribution. In a team project, say what *you* did, not what the team did.
Before
Library Management System — made a project on library management using Java.
After
Library Management System | Java, MySQL, JDBC | Mar–May 2025 — • Built the issue/return and fine-calculation modules in a 4-member team project. • Designed the MySQL schema and wrote the search queries for books by title, author and ISBN.
The after version names the tools, your own part, and something concrete. Use only facts you can explain in an interview.
Non-tech freshers do the same with case studies and live projects: “Analysed 3 years of a listed FMCG company's annual reports to compare working-capital cycles; presented findings to the faculty panel.”
What skills should a fresher put on a résumé?
List only skills you can use in an interview or test, grouped by type, in the words the job description uses. Recruiters and applicant tracking systems (ATS) search for those exact terms.
| Stream | Group | Example entries |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech / BCA | Languages · Tools · Concepts | Python, Java, SQL · Git, VS Code, Postman · OOP, DBMS, REST APIs |
| B.Com / BBA | Accounting · Tools · Domain | GST returns, Tally Prime · Excel (VLOOKUP, pivot tables) · Reconciliation |
| MBA | Functional · Tools · Analysis | Market research, sales planning · Excel, Power BI · Financial modelling |
- Don't rate skills with stars or bars — they mean nothing to a recruiter and can confuse ATS parsing.
- Skip vague soft skills (“team player”, “hardworking”). Show them through a project or position of responsibility instead.
How long should it be, and what personal details are expected?
A fresher résumé should be one page. If it spills over, cut the weakest project bullets, school-level achievements and generic hobbies first — not your education details.
| Detail | Include? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Phone, email, city | Yes | Recruiters need to reach you and know your location for relocation questions. |
| LinkedIn / GitHub / portfolio | If maintained | A link to an empty profile hurts more than no link. |
| Photo | No, unless asked | Most private-sector applications don't need it, and it can break ATS parsing. Add it only if the employer or form asks. |
| Date of birth, gender, marital status | No, unless asked | Not needed to judge your fit; some government and PSU forms collect it separately. |
| Father's name, religion, full address | No | An outdated biodata habit. Leave it for the application form if required. |
| Declaration and signature | Optional | Some Indian recruiters still expect it; it uses space, so drop it if you're short of room. |

Common fresher résumé mistakes to avoid
- A generic objective — “to work in a reputed organisation” tells the recruiter nothing. Name the role and your skills.
- Two-column or graphic-heavy designs — they look modern but many ATS read columns out of order. Use a single column.
- Listing every course — pick the 3–4 subjects relevant to the job, or skip coursework if projects cover it.
- Copying a friend's project bullets — interviewers ask follow-up questions; you will be caught.
- An unprofessional email — make a firstname.lastname address for job hunting.
- Sending a .docx with broken formatting — export to PDF unless the portal asks for Word.
- One résumé for every job — adjust the summary and skills to each job description. The free ATS score checker shows which keywords you're missing.

Questions people ask
What is the best résumé format for freshers in India?
A reverse-chronological, single-column, one-page format with education and projects near the top. See fresher résumé format for layouts.
Should a fresher write an objective or a summary?
A 2-line summary that names your degree, a few real skills and the role you want. It does the job of an objective without the clichés.
Can a fresher résumé be two pages?
Keep it to one page. Freshers rarely have two pages of relevant content, and recruiters screening campus volumes prefer a single page.
Do I need to mention 10th and 12th marks if I have a degree?
For fresher roles in India, yes. Many campus and mass-recruitment drives check them against eligibility criteria.
Should I add a photo to my fresher résumé?
Not unless the employer or form asks. A photo adds nothing to your fit for most private-sector roles and can interfere with ATS parsing.
What if I have no internship?
Lead with two strong projects, then certifications and positions of responsibility. A well-described project shows the same things an internship would.
