What does an Art Director do?
Owns the visual idea and look of campaigns, brand work or productions, turning briefs into layouts, key visuals and shoot plans. Partners with a copywriter, guides designers and illustrators, and presents work to clients and the Creative Director.
A typical day: Morning starts with a brief or a creative review where the copywriter and art director pitch routes to the Creative Director. The afternoon goes into mood boards, layouts and key visuals, plus reviewing adaptations made by the design team. Some days are spent on set directing a shoot or sitting with the printer or post-production house to sign off final output.
How people get in: Usually a BFA, B.Des or diploma in applied arts/communication design (e.g. Sir JJ School of Art, NID, MIT Institute of Design) plus 3–5 years as a designer or visualiser with a strong portfolio.
