One-page résumé: when to use it and how to fit everything
A one-page résumé is the right length for most freshers and early-career professionals in India. Getting there is about cutting what doesn't help you — not shrinking the font until it's unreadable.

Quick answer
Use a one-page résumé if you are a fresher or have up to about 5–7 years of experience; use two pages if you have more relevant experience than one page can hold without losing important results. To fit one page, cut personal details, the declaration, objectives, school marks and older bullets first, then tighten layout — but keep body text at 10 pt or larger and margins at about 0.5 inch or more.
- Cut content before you touch font size or margins.
- Keep 3–5 bullets for recent roles and 1–2 for older ones.
- Never go below 10 pt body text to squeeze onto one page.
Should your résumé be one page or two?
Length should follow how much relevant evidence you have, not a fixed rule. A good guide for Indian job applications:
| Your profile | Recommended length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fresher / final-year student | One page | Education, 2–3 projects, internships and skills fit comfortably |
| 1–5 years of experience | One page | One or two jobs with 3–5 strong bullets each |
| 5–7 years | One page, or two if you have many relevant results | Decide by whether page two would hold real achievements |
| 8+ years / managers | Two pages | Multiple roles, leadership scope and projects need room |
| Academic, research or senior technical roles | Two pages or more (CV) | Publications, patents and grants are expected in full |
What should you cut to fit one page?
Cut in this order — the first items cost you nothing, the later ones need judgement.
- 1
Personal details beyond contact info
Keep name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn. Drop date of birth, father's name, marital status, languages known (unless the job needs them) and the photo.
- 2
Declaration and “References available on request”
Neither is expected on a private-sector résumé. Together they often take 3–5 lines.
- 3
Objective
Replace a 4-line objective with a 2-line summary, or remove it if your experience speaks for itself.
- 4
School details
Experienced candidates can drop Class 10/12 marks unless an employer asks. Freshers can put them on a single line each.
- 5
Older and less relevant bullets
Give recent roles 3–5 bullets and older roles 1–2. A role from many years ago can be just title, company and dates.
- 6
Weak bullets and repeated skills
Remove bullets that don't show a result, and skills already obvious from your bullets (e.g. “MS Word” for an analyst).
- 7
Generic hobbies and soft-skill lists
“Team player, hardworking, good communication” doesn't earn its line. Show these through bullets instead.
What font size and margins keep a one-page résumé readable?
Once the content is tight, a few layout changes recover space without making the page hard to read. Stay within these limits:
| Setting | Comfortable | Minimum — don't go below |
|---|---|---|
| Body font size | 10.5–11 pt | 10 pt |
| Name / headings | 14–18 pt / 11–12 pt | Clearly larger than body text |
| Margins | 0.6–0.8 inch | About 0.5 inch |
| Line spacing | 1.0–1.15 | 1.0 |
| Fonts | Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, Georgia, Garamond | Avoid condensed or decorative fonts |
- Put contact details on one line separated by “·” instead of four stacked lines.
- Combine short sections — e.g. “Certifications & Achievements”.
- Write skills as grouped lines (“Languages: Python, SQL · Tools: Power BI, Git”) instead of a long vertical list.
- Shorten bullets that wrap by one or two words — rephrasing saves a full line each time.
- Keep a single column. Two-column layouts look like they save space, but they often confuse ATS parsing.
Before and after: compressing a section
Here is an internship section from a fresher's two-page résumé, cut to fit a one-page version without losing anything a recruiter would value.
Before
Internship at XYZ Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad (May 2025 – July 2025) • I was responsible for working on the company's internal web portal. • I learnt about React and Node.js during the internship. • Attended daily stand-up meetings with the team. • Helped in fixing bugs reported by the testing team. • Worked with my mentor on improving the login page. • Gained knowledge about Agile methodology and Jira.
After
Software Intern — XYZ Technologies, Hyderabad · May–Jul 2025 • Fixed 20+ UI bugs in the internal web portal (React, Node.js) within an Agile team using Jira. • Rebuilt the portal's login page with my mentor, adding form validation and error messages.
Six bullets → two, about 70 words → 35. “Learnt” and “attended” bullets are cut; the tools move into the bullets that prove them. Use your real numbers.
What does a one-page résumé format look like?
A good one-page format has five or six sections in a single column. For a fresher:
One-page résumé structure (fresher)
Name · City · Phone · Email · LinkedIn · GitHub SUMMARY — 2 lines: degree, target role, 2–3 key skills EDUCATION — Degree, college, year, CGPA (if 7+); Class 12 & 10 on one line each if needed PROJECTS — 2–3 projects, 2 bullets each, tools named INTERNSHIPS / EXPERIENCE — 2–3 bullets each SKILLS — grouped: Languages · Tools · Concepts CERTIFICATIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS — 2–4 lines
For someone with experience, move Experience to the top (after the summary), shrink Education to two lines and keep Projects only if they add something your jobs don't.

Questions people ask
Is a one-page résumé better in India?
For freshers and candidates with under about 5–7 years of experience, usually yes — it is quicker to scan and forces you to lead with your strongest work. With more relevant experience, two full pages is fine.
How do I compress my résumé to one page?
Remove personal details beyond contact info, the declaration and references line, then trim older and weaker bullets. Only after that, reduce margins to about 0.5–0.7 inch and body text to 10–11 pt.
Is a two-page résumé a problem for a fresher?
It usually signals padding: school marks, course lists, hobbies, a declaration. Cut those and most fresher résumés fit on one page.
Can I use two columns to fit more on one page?
It is risky for ATS parsing because some systems read across columns and mix your content. A tight single-column layout is safer and usually fits just as much.
What is the smallest font size I can use?
Keep body text at 10 pt or above. Below that, the résumé becomes hard to read on paper and on phones, which defeats the purpose of fitting it on one page.
Should my Naukri résumé also be one page?
The same length guidance applies. Your Naukri profile fields carry extra detail, so the attached résumé can stay concise.
