What does an Embedded Systems Engineer do?

Writes and debugs low-level software in C/C++ that runs on microcontrollers and processors inside cars, medical devices, consumer electronics and industrial equipment. Works closely with hardware designers, test engineers and system architects.

A typical day: You might start by flashing a new firmware build onto a board and checking behaviour on a test bench. Much of the day goes into writing drivers or application code in C, then debugging timing issues with a debugger, oscilloscope or CAN logs. You also work with hardware engineers on board issues and with test teams on defects.

How people get in: B.Tech/B.E. in ECE, EEE, Instrumentation or CS, sometimes an M.Tech in VLSI/Embedded Systems; strong C and microcontroller project work are key.

How much does an Embedded Systems Engineer earn in India?

ExperienceTypical annual CTC
Entry (0–2 years)₹3.5L–₹7L
Mid (3–6 years)₹7L–₹14L
Senior (7+ years)₹14L–₹28L+

Semiconductor firms and automotive GCCs (AUTOSAR, ADAS) pay more than small product or services firms; Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad have the most roles.

How to write an Embedded Systems Engineer resume that gets shortlisted

  1. 1

Name the microcontroller, protocols and RTOS you used.

ExampleWrote SPI and I2C drivers for an STM32F4 data logger on FreeRTOS, sampling 8 sensors at 1 kHz.

  2. 2

Show optimisation results in memory, power or timing.

ExampleReduced firmware flash size 22% and sleep current from 1.2 mA to 180 µA on a battery-powered tracker.

  3. 3

Show work on certified or production products.

ExampleDelivered CAN-based body control features for an ECU shipped in 2 passenger car models, closing 140 defects before SOP.

Common Embedded Systems Engineer interview questions

What does the volatile keyword do, and when must you use it?

Explain compiler optimisation, memory-mapped registers, variables shared with ISRs, and that it does not make code thread-safe.

Compare SPI, I2C and UART.

Cover number of wires, speed, master/slave addressing and a use case for each.

What should and should not be done inside an interrupt service routine?

Keep ISRs short, avoid blocking calls and printf, use flags or queues, and discuss priority and latency.

How does a mutex differ from a semaphore in an RTOS?

Explain ownership, priority inversion and priority inheritance with an example.
