What does a Civil Engineer do?
Plans, designs and executes buildings, roads, bridges, water and other infrastructure projects. Works with architects, structural consultants, contractors, surveyors and clients on drawings, quantities, quality and schedules.
A typical day: Part of the day goes to drawings, quantities and bills in the office, and part to the site checking work against them. You coordinate with consultants on design queries, review contractor bills and track progress against the schedule. Quality checks such as cube tests, slump tests and reinforcement inspection are routine.
