ATS résumé checkers in India: how they work and how to choose one
An ATS checker estimates how well an applicant tracking system can read your résumé and how closely it matches a job. Useful, but no checker sees inside a specific employer's system. Here is what the score means and how to use one properly.

Quick answer
An ATS résumé checker reads your résumé file the way an applicant tracking system might, then reports whether it parsed cleanly and which keywords from a job description are missing. The most useful free checkers compare against a pasted job description. Treat the score as a to-do list, not a prediction: no checker knows how a particular employer has configured its ATS.
- Always paste the job description. A score without one only reflects general formatting.
- Check what was parsed: name, email, job titles, dates. Errors there matter more than the score.
- Add missing keywords only where they are true for you.
How do ATS résumé checkers work?
ATS checkers work in two steps: they extract the text and structure from your résumé file (parsing), then compare that text with a job description or a list of common requirements (matching). The score combines the two.
- Parsing: reading the PDF or Word file and identifying sections such as contact details, experience, education and skills. Tables, columns, text boxes, images and content in headers or footers are where parsing usually goes wrong.
- Keyword matching: finding the skills, tools, job titles and qualifications in the job description, and checking whether your résumé contains them, ideally in the same wording.
- Formatting checks: fonts, file type, length, section headings and dates that a parser may misread.
Real applicant tracking systems used by employers (Workday, Taleo, SAP SuccessFactors, Greenhouse and others) also parse résumés into fields, and recruiters then search and filter those fields. How each employer sets up screening varies, and much of it is done by a person reading the parsed profile.
What can't an ATS checker tell you?
An ATS checker can't tell you whether a particular company will shortlist you. It doesn't know that employer's settings, knockout questions, the other applicants, or what the recruiter will search for.
- Scores are not comparable between tools: an 80 in one checker and a 65 in another may describe the same résumé.
- A high score with keywords you can't back up will hurt you in the interview.
- Knockout questions on the application form (notice period, location, years of experience, CTC) can screen you out regardless of the résumé.
- A job-portal profile score measures how complete your portal profile is, not how your résumé file parses on a company's own career site.
What should a good ATS checker report?
A good ATS checker report tells you what to change, not just a number. Look for these in the results.
| Report item | What good looks like | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword match vs the job description | Lists found and missing skills/terms from the JD | Add missing ones you genuinely have, in the JD's wording |
| Parsed fields | Shows the name, email, phone, titles and dates it extracted | Fix anything missing or merged (often a layout problem) |
| Section detection | Recognises Experience, Education, Skills, Projects | Rename creative headings to standard ones |
| Formatting warnings | Flags tables, columns, images, header/footer text | Simplify the layout or switch template |
| Specific suggestions | Points to the line or section to improve | Rewrite weak bullets with action + result |
Before
JD asks for “Power BI, SQL, stakeholder reporting”. Résumé says: “Made dashboards and handled data for the team.”
After
“Built [X] Power BI dashboards on SQL data for weekly stakeholder reporting to the sales and finance heads.”
Same work, now in the job's own words. Only use terms that describe what you actually did, and replace [X] with your real number.
What types of ATS checkers can you use in India?
ATS checkers fall into three broad types. Each has a place; the right one depends on where you are applying.
| Type | Strengths | Limits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Job-portal tools (for example Naukri's résumé and profile tools) | Built into the portal you already use; help your profile show up in recruiter searches on that portal | Focus on the portal profile; deeper résumé services are often paid | Applying mainly through that portal |
| International ATS checkers | Often detailed keyword matching and mature reports | Usually priced in USD with subscriptions; examples and advice lean toward US/UK résumés | Applying to global roles, if you're comfortable with the pricing |
| Builder-integrated checkers | Check and fix in the same place, often free to try | Tied to that builder's editor and templates | Building or rebuilding a résumé and checking each version |
Using more than one is fine. A common pattern in India: keep your Naukri and LinkedIn profiles complete for recruiter searches, and check the résumé file you upload to company career portals separately against each job description.
How do you use an ATS checker well?
- 1
Start from the right file
Check the exact PDF or DOCX you will upload, not a draft in another format.
- 2
Paste the full job description
Include requirements and responsibilities, not just the title.
- 3
Fix parsing first
If your name, email or job titles are wrong in the parsed view, fix the layout before touching keywords.
- 4
Add true keywords
Work missing skills into bullets where you used them, and into the skills section.
- 5
Re-check, then stop
Once parsing is clean and the key skills are covered, more score points rarely change outcomes. Spend the time on applications.

Where does ResumeGyani's ATS checker fit?
ResumeGyani's ATS score checker is a free, builder-integrated checker. You can upload a PDF or Word résumé, optionally add a job description, and get a score with missing keywords and suggestions. If the layout is the problem, you can move your content into one of 49 ATS-friendly templates in the résumé builder.
If you only apply through one job portal, that portal's own tools may be enough. If you want the most detailed keyword reports and don't mind a USD subscription, an international checker may suit you. For tailoring an Indian résumé to each job, the JD-based résumé builder does the matching while you write.
Questions people ask
Is there a free ATS résumé checker?
Yes. Several builders and some independent tools offer a free check. ResumeGyani's ATS score checker is free and accepts a job description.
What is a good ATS score?
There is no universal number, because each tool scores differently. Aim for clean parsing and coverage of the job's main skills, rather than a particular score.
Does Naukri have an ATS checker?
Naukri offers résumé and profile tools, some free and some paid; check Naukri directly for what is currently included. A Naukri profile score is about your profile on Naukri, not how your résumé file parses on a company's career site.
Is Naukri's ATS the same as a company's ATS?
No. Naukri is a job portal with its own recruiter search. Many companies run separate applicant tracking systems on their career sites, so check your résumé file separately.
Can an ATS checker guarantee a shortlist?
No. It can show formatting problems and missing keywords. Shortlisting also depends on the employer's criteria, application questions and the recruiter.
Should I stuff keywords to raise the score?
No. Hidden or irrelevant keywords can be spotted by recruiters and will come up in interviews. Add only skills you have, in context.
PDF or Word for ATS?
Most modern systems read a text-based PDF well. Use DOCX if the portal asks for it. Either way, test that the text copies out in the right order.
