ATS score checker guide

What is an ATS score?

An ATS score is an estimate, out of 100, of how well an applicant tracking system can read your résumé and match it to a role. An ATS score checker reads your file the way a résumé parser does, then checks keywords, content and formatting. On our checker 80 or above is strong, 65–79 is readable with gaps, and below 65 you are likely losing matches.

Employers use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to collect applications, turn each résumé into searchable text and filter or rank candidates. Workday, Oracle Taleo, SAP SuccessFactors, Greenhouse and Lever are common ones; job portals such as Naukri parse your CV in a similar way so recruiters can search it. None of these systems shows you a score. A checker like this one gives you a practical proxy: if your score is low, a recruiter searching for your skills is less likely to find you, and less likely to stay on your résumé if they do.

Two numbers matter. A general score tells you whether the résumé is complete and well written for your own role. A job-match score, which you get by pasting a job description after you upload, tells you how well it fits one specific opening. Check the general score once, then the job-match score for every role you care about.

How is your ATS score calculated?

Your score is a weighted sum of four parts, with fixed weights. The AI does not pick a number. It reads the résumé and lists evidence (keywords found and missing, problem lines quoted word for word), and our server turns those lists and a few direct counts, such as how many bullets contain a number, into the score. That is why the same résumé and job description always get the same score.

Without a job description: general score

PartWeightWhat it checks
Content completeness35%Email and phone present, a summary of 25+ words, at least one job or project, two or more bullets per role, education listed, bullets that contain a number, bullets that do not open with “Responsible for” or “Worked on”, no unfilled [placeholders].
Keyword usage25%How many role keywords appear inside your experience, projects or summary, not just the Skills list. 12 or more scores full marks; each commonly expected keyword that is missing takes a little off.
Formatting & language25%Problems visible in the text: missing contact details, decorative symbols, inconsistent dates, missing standard headings, long paragraphs instead of bullets, spelling and grammar errors, overused words.
Skills presentation15%A list of 8–25 skills (13–25 scores highest) where at least half the skills are backed up by a bullet that shows you using them.

With a job description: job-match score

PartWeightWhat it checks
JD keyword match40%Share of the job description's keywords your résumé shows. Required skills count three times, secondary ones twice, nice-to-haves once.
Hard-skills alignment30%How many of the tools, technologies and methods the job asks for are on your résumé.
Experience relevance20%Whether your past roles are a strong, partial or weak match for this job's work and level.
Content & formatting10%The average of the content-completeness and formatting checks above.

What the checker cannot see

Like a real ATS, the checker works on the text extracted from your file, not on how the page looks. It will not guess that you used two columns, but if columns or a table scramble the reading order, you will see it in the report as jumbled or empty sections. It also cannot know how a particular employer has set up its own system, so treat the score as a readiness check, not a guarantee of a shortlist.

What is a good ATS score?

Aim for 80 or above before you apply. There is no official pass mark: each employer sets its own filters, and different checkers score differently, so compare your score only with itself, before and after a fix.

80–100

Strong

Reads cleanly and covers the role's keywords. A few small fixes will polish it.

65–79

Readable, with gaps

Most systems read it, but missing keywords, numbers or sections are costing you matches.

50–64

Needs work

Some systems will struggle with it. Fix structure, contact details and keywords first.

0–49

Rebuild

Core sections or keywords are missing. Start from a single-column template and the job description.

How do you raise your ATS score?

Fix what the rubric rewards, in this order. Most résumés gain the most from the first three.

  1. 1

Put a number in at least half your bullets. Count, time, ₹, %, users, tickets, accounts. Bullets with numbers are the biggest single lever in content completeness. If you do not know the exact figure, use an honest estimate you can defend in an interview.

  2. 2

Start bullets with what you did. Replace “Responsible for”, “Worked on” and “Involved in” with a past-tense action verb: Built, Reduced, Migrated, Closed, Trained.

  3. 3

Use your keywords in context. A skill listed only in the Skills section counts for less than one you show in a bullet. Write “Built dashboards in Power BI for 4 regional managers”, not just “Power BI”.

  4. 4

Match the job description's exact terms. If the JD says “Stakeholder Management”, use that phrase where it is true, not a synonym. Spell acronyms out once: “Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)”.

  5. 5

Write a 25–60 word summary. Role, years of experience, two or three core skills and one result. A missing or one-line summary loses points.

  6. 6

Give every role at least two bullets. Roles with a single line read as thin. Internships and projects count; freshers should list projects with bullets.

  7. 7

Keep contact details and headings standard. Email, phone and city at the top in the body of the page. Headings named Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects.

  8. 8

Re-check after every change. Upload the edited file again to confirm the score moved and no new issue appeared.

Example: one bullet, before and after

Before

Responsible for handling customer queries and escalations.

After

Resolved 40+ customer queries a day over phone and email in Freshdesk, and cut open escalations from 25 to 8 in three months.

The rewrite opens with an action verb, contains numbers and names a tool, so it helps content completeness, keyword usage and skills presentation at once. Use only figures that are true for you; the report marks missing numbers as [N] for you to fill in.

Five parsing errors that hide your content

  • Columns and tables: Two-column résumés are often read straight across both columns, merging experience with skills.

  • Icons and graphics: Parsers cannot read logos, star ratings or skill bars. Write the skill and level as text.

  • Details in the header or footer: Some parsers skip these areas. Keep contact details in the main body.

  • Image-based PDFs: Scanned résumés and some design exports contain no selectable text at all.

  • Creative section names: “Professional Arsenal” will not be recognised as a Skills section.

How do you check your Naukri ATS score?

Upload the same résumé file you use on Naukri to the checker above. The score tells you how well a parser reads it and whether it carries the keywords recruiters type. Naukri itself does not show an ATS score and does not publish how it ranks candidates; ResumeGyani is not affiliated with Naukri. What we can describe, and what this Naukri-style check tests, is how résumé parsing and recruiter keyword search generally work:

  1. 1

    Parse

When you upload a CV, a résumé parser extracts its text and splits it into fields: name, contact details, current designation, employers, dates, education and skills. Columns, tables, text boxes and images are the usual reasons text comes out jumbled or missing.

  2. 2

    Index

The extracted fields sit alongside your Naukri profile (headline, key skills, total experience, location, notice period). If the parser could not find your Skills section, those skills are not there to be searched.

  3. 3

    Search & filter

Recruiters searching a résumé database type keywords (a skill, a tool, a job title) and narrow by filters such as experience, location, salary and how recently the profile was active. Résumés that contain the exact terms and fit the filters are the ones that show up.

  4. 4

    Shortlist

A recruiter scans the results, opens a handful of profiles and reads the résumé itself. A clear headline, a short summary and a skills list that matches the search earn the call.

Is a Naukri ATS score different from profile completeness?

Yes. Naukri's profile-completeness percentage counts how many profile fields you have filled in. An ATS score is about the résumé file: whether it parses, and whether it contains the terms recruiters search. Recruiters see both, so do three Naukri-specific things on top of the fixes above: keep your headline, key skills, total experience and current role identical in the profile and the résumé; write skills the way recruiters type them (“React.js”, “SAP FICO”, “Inside Sales”); and refresh your profile while you are looking, because recruiters can filter by recent activity.

The same résumé also works on company careers portals. TCS, Infosys, Accenture and most large employers run their own applicant tracking systems, which parse résumés in the same general way. ATS score checker FAQs

What is a good ATS score?

On ResumeGyani's checker, 80 or above is strong: the résumé reads cleanly and covers the keywords for the role, so only small fixes remain. 65–79 is readable with gaps, 50–64 needs work before you apply widely, and below 50 the content or keywords need rebuilding. There is no universal ATS score; every checker and every employer system measures differently.

Is this ATS score checker free?

Yes, your first check is free and needs no signup. It gives you the overall score out of 100, a summary verdict and your top issue. More checks, the full category-by-category report and AI fixes need a paid plan: Pro starts at ₹699 for 30 days, a one-time payment with no auto-renewal.

How is the ATS score calculated?

Without a job description, the score is a fixed-weight mix of content completeness (35%), keyword usage (25%), formatting and language (25%) and skills presentation (15%). With a job description, it becomes JD keyword match (40%), hard-skills alignment (30%), experience relevance (20%) and content and formatting (10%). The AI only lists evidence such as keywords and quoted problem lines; the server applies the weights.

Will I get the same score if I upload the same resume twice?

Yes. The analysis runs at a fixed setting and results are cached against the résumé text and job description, so the same file with the same job description returns the same score. The score changes only when the text or the job description changes.

Is 75 a good ATS score?

75 is fair: most systems can read the résumé, but there are fixable gaps, usually bullets without numbers, a thin summary, or role keywords that sit only in the Skills list and never in your experience. Work through the fixes in your report and aim for 80 or above.

Should I paste the job description?

Yes, if you are applying to a specific job. With a job description, 40% of the score is how many of its keywords your résumé shows, with required skills weighted three times as much as nice-to-haves, so you see exactly which terms are missing. Without one, the checker judges the résumé against its own role.

Can an ATS read a PDF resume?

Yes, if it is a text-based PDF. Modern systems read text PDFs and Word files well. The problem is scanned or image-only PDFs, which contain no selectable text. The checker accepts PDF, DOCX and DOC files up to 5 MB.

Does Naukri show my ATS score?

No. Naukri shows a profile-completeness indicator for your Naukri profile, which is not an ATS score. ResumeGyani is not affiliated with Naukri; our Naukri-style score estimates how well your résumé file reads and matches the keywords recruiters search for. Keep both your profile and your résumé strong.

Can Canva resumes pass ATS?

Not reliably. Many design templates use two columns, text boxes, icons and skill bars, and some exports store text in an order parsers read wrongly. Run your Canva PDF through the checker: if sections come back empty or jumbled in the report, move to a single-column template.

Does this tool save my resume?

We process your résumé to generate the score and recommendations. We do not sell your data to third-party recruiters.

Check your score, fix the top issue, check again

Most résumés gain the most from two changes: numbers in the bullets and the job description's exact keywords.
